Our 2012 Reserve Merlot was grown in two of our estate vineyards. Osoyoos, the region’s most southern area, is comprised of arid benchlands that benefit from the lake’s effect providing the region with more than 200 frost-free days. This warm climate allows our Bordeaux varietals to completely ripen for full flavour. Black Sage Bench is a diverse vineyard with more than 60 different individual blocks affording us an amazing array of premium quality fruit.
The 2012 vintage is a reminder that the Okanagan is one of the world’s northern-most serious wine regions. After a generally dry, warm growing season, the last few weeks of harvest cooled considerably. The summer ensured ideal fruit development. Veraison took place under nearly ideal conditions that lasted from mid-August through September. The continuation of mild autumn weather gave promise that the grapes developed thick skins and expectations of flavourful, extracted wines. Harvest began on September 13th with sunny skies and moderate temperatures, delivering the early ripening varieties. The night cooled drastically in late September, preserving the freshness of our top quality grapes bringing welcome respite after an incredibly dry growing season.
Intense black cherry in colour, our Reserve Merlot abounds with aromas of plum, blackberry, and mocha. Dusty tannins, indicative of the region, support the rich fruit. The lingering finish is tinged with espresso, sage, and anise. 12 months of oak barrel aging completed this wine.
